Japanese rice has a relatively short and rounded grain compared to rice from Southeast Asia. There are roughly two types of rice in Japan. It is called "Uruchi rice" and "Mochi rice". Rice called "Uruchi rice" is rice that is eaten on a daily basis. Another type of rice called "Mochi rice" is traditionally eaten at celebrations.
